Many homes in and around Wolverhampton were built long before today's electrical demands — and before modern safety standards. If your wiring hasn't been updated for a few decades, it's worth looking for these signs.
Warning signs
An old fuse box
A fuse box with rewireable fuses, a wooden back board or no RCD protection is a strong sign the installation is outdated.
Old cable types
Rubber, fabric or lead-sheathed cables are found in older properties and deteriorate with age. Even old PVC cable with red and black cores (rather than brown and blue) indicates the wiring has been in place for many years.
Outdated sockets and switches
Round-pin sockets, sockets on skirting boards, or brown Bakelite switches suggest the wiring behind them is just as old.
Scorch marks, buzzing or burning smells
Discolouration around sockets and switches, a burning smell or a buzzing sound are signs of overheating. Treat these as urgent.
Frequent tripping or blown fuses
Occasional trips happen, but constant problems can point to deteriorating wiring. See why does my electricity keep tripping?
Not enough sockets
If you rely on extension leads and adaptors in most rooms, your installation wasn't designed for modern life — and overloaded extension leads are a fire risk.
The best way to know for sure
An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) tests the condition of your wiring and tells you whether it needs repairs, a partial rewire or a full rewire. It's especially worthwhile when buying an older home.
